Jessica Lea Mayfield With Blasphemy So Heartfelt Rar

With blasphemy so heartfelt Jessica Lea Mayfield's career started at the age of eight as a member of her family's bluegrass band One Way Rider. The band One Way Rider's touring path went from Ohio to Tennessee.

The word on Jessica Lea Mayfield’s acclaimed 2008 debut, “With Blasphemy So Heartfelt,’’ was simple: What a talented young singer-songwriter. That was true — Mayfield was 19 when it was released — but the compliment tended to deflect her potential to grow.

It’s refreshing, then, to see her blossom on her seductive new sophomore album. Working again with the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who produced her debut, Mayfield opens her music to a broader landscape in everything from her songwriting to the arrangements. In place of twang, there are irresistible pop hooks (“Nervous Lonely Night’’) and spectral melancholy (“Trouble’’). “Blue Skies Again’’ is set to ’60s soul grooves and a chorus that rings out in hand-claps and angular electric guitar. Her delivery has evolved, too; her voice, particularly on “Our Hearts Are Wrong,’’ now bobs with a brightness reminiscent of indie singer Julie Doiron.

Overall, Mayfield sounds more nuanced and world-weary here. “I ain’t gonna change for nobody at all / I’m starting to like this new love I have found,’’ she ruminates on “Run Myself Into the Ground.’’.
